We have been deeply committed to improving the lives of girls and women through our HER PERIOD MATTERS Initiative, which addresses the pressing issue of period poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.
Period poverty remains a pervasive problem in the region, especially in rural communities, where women and girls lack access to menstrual products, water, sanitation, and proper hygiene facilities. As a result, they face numerous challenges, including compromised physical health, limited education opportunities, and diminished gender empowerment. According to a 2014 UNESCO report, one out of every 10 girls in sub-Saharan Africa misses school during her menstrual cycle, which significantly hampers their educational progress and long-term prospects.
Through our HER PERIOD MATTERS Initiative, we have made a significant impact by distributing over 1,300 sanitary pads to 112 Junior High School girls in Tamale, specifically at Zagyuri Anglican School, between March 2021 and April 2022. However, our vision extends beyond a single school, and we aim to expand our reach to five other schools in the Sagnarigu School District of Tamale.
